This blog is the story of the Magic Dragon, a beautiful 37 foot Tayana sailboat and the couple that sails her. I hope to record our adventures for our families and friends back home so that they can share this dream with us from afar. I also hope to somehow try to capture the evolution of a little girl herding sheep in North Dakota to a Sailor in the Pacific. As I organize and envision these initial posts in my head I am reminded of a marketing scheme that Sears employed many years ago….the softer side of Sears. I think the beginning of this blog will be more like “The Softer Side of Sailing”. This will be a blog (at least in the beginning) for those of you out there who have a reluctant partner. I was that reluctant partner. I did not come to this lifestyle quickly or naturally, I grew up a farm girl from a long line of cowboys, farm women, and bronc busters. It was definitely a process and hopefully I can be an inspiration if not to a reluctant partner perhaps to someone who is too cautious or afraid to take a leap of faith and embrace all of the possibilities that life has to offer. Fair Winds.

The Great Turtle Caper It was Christmas time again which meant that Sierra would be coming to spend time with us. I was excited because there was no looming crisis like last year when she came down and we had no engine and were stranded in Cabo. This year we were where we said we … Continue reading The Great Turtle Caper
Take a Ride
Take a Ride One of my favorite experiences in Mexico has been the public transport bus system. Not everyone in Mexico can afford cars and most don’t really need them so almost everyone uses the buses daily. There doesn’t seem to be the stigma surrounding public transit in Mexico that there is in the states. … Continue reading Take a Ride
That Sinking Feeling
That Sinking Feeling We were getting ready to leave La Paz and head over to the mainland. I was more than ready. La Paz is not my favorite place. They have a saying there that once you come to La Paz you will keep coming back or even stay and never leave because she tends … Continue reading That Sinking Feeling
